4 reasons why CTOs should consider using Robotic Process Automation to optimize business processes
In this interview, Johnny Ramondino, President of IN-RGY Consulting, and Brian Terrell, Managing Partner of BTerrell Group, discuss how Chief Technology Officers should approach RPA projects. The interview reveals key differences and benefits between screen scripting and testing tools compared to Robotic Process Automation.

When I talk with CTOs at Intacct client companies and mention RPA, I often hear in response, "Oh, yeah, screen scripting," or, "That's like our testing tool." That's off the mark, don't you agree?
Johnny Ramondino:
It's very interesting. I think of scripting technology as a way for people to understand what we're talking about when it comes to RPA because they can relate to it.
Firstly, scripting technology implies that RPA is coding, but it isn’t. RPA involves visually aligning business processes, which are then automated and thus very different from how you think when scripting.
Secondly, screen scripting often is very tactical in terms of positioning and imaging of where you are trying to go, with very little intelligence about the application you're interacting with. Robotic process automation leverages the object layer of the application in the same way your operating system is leveraging and interacting with the applications on your desktop or server. This is the same way robotic process automation interacts with applications.
Third, intelligence. The same intelligence and consistency you can use to run a piece of software on an operating system is being used to interact with robotic process automation.
RPA is entirely different from screen scripting as you're talking about object layer interaction. One additional benefit of RPA, and key difference from screen scripting, is that it can be applied to any application and is easy to reuse with very little tweaking.
