Protecting POS Data From Cybercriminal Activity

Posted by Brian Terrell on Tue, Jan 26, 2016

There are many types of cybercriminal activities and many target the point of sale (POS) system at retailers of all sizes and types.  As discussed inOn-Demand_Economy_shopping.jpgHeartland: Leading Provider of Security Technology for Payment Processing, Payroll, and POS,” common POS malware includes two threads including the ‘process or scraper thread’ that targets the POS process and steals credit card data from the device’s memory.  The secondary thread, the ‘transfer thread’, then transfers that data to another machine controlled by the cybercriminals. Retail CIO Outlook recently named Heartland Payment Systems as a 2015 “Top 10 POS Solution Provider” for their Heartland Secure solution that offers powerful security technology for card processes and offers a comprehensive breach warranty.

Heartland solutions separates the POS data from the credit card data, includes EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa) technology, encryption and tokenization, and offers powerful business intelligence for card transactions.  This technology, as well as other business solutions, can provide an increase in security, necessary for businesses to protect customer and other proprietary data. Contact the BTerrell Group to discuss these and other options for strengthening your business technology and processes that can improve security and decrease the chances for cybercriminal activity.
