Business and IT - can the two coexist?

In this interview, Johnny Ramondino, President of IN-RGY Consulting, and Brian Terrell, Managing Partner of BTerrell Group, discuss how Robotic Process Automation can ease the burden on the IT department while meeting the changing needs of the business.

This is the eighth in a series of articles and videos where we get Johnny’s take on deploying RPA alongside mid-market Cloud ERP.

Brian Terrell, Managing Partner of BTerrell Group and an Intacct Partner, creates business process automation using Cloud ERP and leading automation tools, including RPA software. RPA automates many business processes faster than other options by accessing applications through the user interface in a code-free and non-invasive manner.

Johnny, I've heard you talk about how robotic process automation can bring the business side of the house closer in alignment with the IT side of the house. For our Sage Intacct client customers, what does that mean? How does that work?

Johnny Ramondino:

I find that IT and business don't always see eye to eye. In fairness, IT has to deal with business needs that change all the time, and business isn't always as fluent in IT. The business doesn’t necessarily understand what they're asking for, what the difficulty is, and what the implication is. You got a Venus and Mars type of situation where communication isn't flowing in the right way.

But with business thinking about automation, it is being forced to think in terms of a more technology oriented approach to servicing. For example, a client of mine is doing just that. A specific line of business was building a solution that was more aligned to communicating with IT. At the same time, IT was really concerned, at first, and was trying work out if the request was going to break things already put together. As the project progressed, IT started to learn that it wasn't, and was actually providing a lot more ease on the IT side because problems that may occur on an end-user side were now in a very controlled environment by the business. Once you have just end-users involved, individual activity is that much harder to control.

That change in mentality and how IT and business started to work together is by far the biggest success of this whole client engagement. As we move our thinking from the way we've been doing business for the last 30 years, into this digital economy, I've a fundamental belief that the organizations that are going to be successful in the digital economy are those that find a way where these different lines of business, or area within the business, can operate in tandem as one.
