How Risky Is Your Domain?

Posted by Meredith Gooch on Wed, Dec 09, 2009

McAfee recently did a new study on the riskiest domains around the world called "Mapping the Mal Web." It should be no surprise that the most popular domain, ".com," is also the riskiest, followed by ".net" and ".org."

However, Cameroon's ".cm" is THE riskiest domain, as it is a common admin error for ".com" and has thus been taken advantage of by cybercriminals scamming people. According to Mike Gallagher, CTO for McAfee labs, "cybercriminals target regions where registering sites is cheap and convenient and pose the least risk of being caught."

After Cameroon, China and Samoa are the next riskiest. The safest domains are governmental ones, ".gov," while Japan's ".jp" ranks higher than education's ".edu."

So if you want to make sure you are dealing with a legit business, first look at the URL to determine the level of risk associated with the domain name.
